From C to C

Nancy, George, Ned, and Katie went back for their kayaks and paddles and raced toward the water. “It was a sneaker!” Katie yelled. “We’ve got to get out of here!”

As she pulled on her helmet, Nancy stared at the azure blue sea, straining to see Jenna. She zipped the pocket flares into her wet suit and tucked the parachute flares in the forward bulkhead, as Katie had shown her.

Then she put her kayak in the shallow water. Bracing herself with her paddle, she stepped into the boat. Sliding her feet forward to the foot braces, she lowered herself into the seat of the cockpit.

Within minutes she felt the tide lift her and carry her quickly away from shore.

Nancy and the others paddled out about fifty yards, looking for Jenna and calling her name. There were no rocks breaking the surface in this immediate area, but Nancy knew some were hidden under the water.

If Jenna hit one of those rocks, Nancy thought, she could be unconscious . . . or worse. We’ve got to reach her—fast.

She stroked her paddle through the water, watching for any sign. Finally she saw something. It was Jenna’s helmet, breaking the surface of the wave. Then her head came up, and Nancy saw her lie back on the water’s surface, gulping air.

“There she is,” Nancy yelled to the others. She pointed with her paddle toward Jenna, bobbing in the surf as she skimmed over the waves about ten yards away.

The four rescuers paddled rapidly toward Jenna. Katie and George reached her first. Nancy struggled as she paddled against the current, but she and Ned finally arrived.

“How is she?” Nancy called out. “Is she all right?”

“She’s fine,” Katie said, giving the thumbs-up sign.

Nancy turned toward shore and gave Bess a wave with her paddle. She could hear Bess’s cheer float across the water.

“Thanks for coming out so quickly, everybody,” Jenna said between coughs. She lay back on the surface, her lifejacket keeping her afloat.

“You’re sure you’re okay?” Nancy asked.

Jenna nodded and smiled.

“Jenna is a real pro,” Katie said. “This may have been her first time with a sneaker wave, but it sure isn’t the first time she’s been dumped in the surf.”

“Yeah, but usually my kayak is somewhere nearby,” Jenna called back, spitting a mouthful of salt water over her shoulder. She pulled up a little on the bow of Katie’s kayak, resting her elbows on the deck. “So what’s a sneaker wave anyway, and how come you didn’t warn me about them?”

“Sorry,” Katie said, with an apologetic smile. “I told the others, but I guess I forgot to tell you.”

“I’ve had quite a few surf spills in my career, but this was one of the worst,” Jenna said, glowering at Katie. “And you’re going to pay for it, too,” she added, “with the hardest workout you’ve ever had. To start with, you can pull me back to shore to get my kayak.”

Katie groaned, in mock distress. Jenna floated around to the stern of Katie’s kayak and grasped the grab loop firmly, her legs bobbing up behind her.
